Best Tips and Practices for Growing from Seeds

How to germinate seeds There are two preferred methods for germinating seeds.

  1. Root Cube Method (Preferred method) – If using root cubes, simply soak the cube in PH’d water (5.5-6.5). Place seeds in the holes in the cubes and push down about a half inch. Do not use any kind of nutrients as it will burn the seedlings. Check cubes daily to make sure cubes don’t dry out. Ambient temperature should be 70-80 degrees F.
  2. Paper Towel Method- SEE VIDEO with one of our breeders, Johnny N explain the paper towel method.

How to sex Cannabis – When germinating feminized seeds, each plant has a 99% chance of being female. When germinating regular seeds, you will likely get both male and female plants. All strains are easy to identify but some will show preflowers earlier than others. Once the preflowers progress , all plants showing any male preflowers can be culled.

How to pick your mother plant – Each seed varies enough genetically that different phenotypes and degrees of vigor will be expressed. If you wish to find the best plant for the purposes of maintaining a mother plant for clones, make sure you take numbered clippings from each plant a couple weeks before changing to 12/12. If possible, wait until each clipping is rooted prior to 12/12. Somewhere in the flower process, you will notice which plant has the best traits. The clone with the corresponding number can now be used as your mother for future generations.

Happy Growing!

You can also take a clipping early in veg, place it in a peat pellet or cube and put it in the flower room to determine sex. You don’t need roots on it to make this happen.

On a 12-12 schedule? And how long before they show sex?

        Hello Chad,
It would depend on the maturity of the plant. If the plant is ready to flower it should take less than 10 days to start showing pistils, possibly as fast as a few days or as long as a few weeks depending on the strain.

I have recently started my ssc’s. I am no pro but not a newbie. Outta the gate the seeds were rockstar! I have one very short stocky pheno and the rest are taller thinner pheno’s. The taller ones are looking a little droopy. Is this a common characteristic, or something I am doing wrong? I am using no nutes for they are only two weeks from germ also using organic seed stated mix, distilled water and a 300 watt mars led which I have been using for two years and not had trouble. Any advice would be appreciated cause I a pumped to see these bushes in flower! Also ready to start my gg’s so excited! Thanks for everything hope to hear from your team soon. Chad

Hi Chad, Im thinking the distilled water. Distilled has no calcium or magnesium at all and without a supplement such as calmag there will be a deficiency. I have personally grown out the SSC and found it to be a very sturdy hardy strain. Grew it last summer outdoors and the buds were heavy with no need for supports. Try some calmag according to the dosage on the bottle, im not sure that is the problem but it will be without some calcium and mg. Good luck with that, let us know how it goes. Johnny N.
